Santa Rocks!

OK, I’ll probably get a lot more use out of the great winter jacket, hat and watch that my family gave me for Christmas–but Santa left some cool tunes in my stocking this Yule as well!

1) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers–Live Anthology. As TP says in the liner notes, this isn’t just the Greatest Hits played faster–but a great document of the Heartbreaker’s power as a live band. Cool covers (“Friend of The Devil”!), segues (check out “Hit The Road Jack” during “Breakdown” and, yes, some hits. 4 CD’s of great stuff (and per TP’s traditional fight for consumers, Santa didn’t get hosed on the price.)

2) Willie Nelson/Asleep At The Wheel–Willie & The Wheel. Channeling the Western Swing soul of bands like Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys–the pedal steel, fiddles and even horns meld blues, country and pop into one big Texas-fried gumbo. You’ll want seconds. Willie’s voice is perfect for this style of music.

3) Public Enemy–Power To The People And The Beats. Hip Hop’s greatest contribution to our culture. I dare you to listen to “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos” and not be moved–to sadness, to rage, to anger, to action. “Fight The Power”, indeed.
