Mark Bialczak, the Post Standard’s music reporter, wrote a great open birthday card to Bruce today, from all his “much ignored fans in Syracuse.”
I just wanted to add two notes:
One of my prized possessions is an old bootleg tape of a Springsteen concert from the 1980’s. As the introduction, Bruce mentions that this song was a request from an audience member and says: “so Phil, if you’re out there, Happy Birthday!” I labeled the tape “Bruce’s Personal Birthday Wish To Me”. It could have been, you never know.
I spent my 25th birthday hanging out in the rafters of the Carrier Dome–January 25th, 1985–three rows from the top, other end of the stadium from the stage. Worst seats ever. But it was my first Bruce show, and like so many other folks, it was a life changing event. A friend went out of his way to scam a couple free tickets from his sister who had a friend who had a friend with some extras. I’ll never forget the experience. Thanks to Brad Roth, wherever he is!
Amazing show: Racing In The Street, Thunder Road, Reason To Believe, Because The Night and two exciting covers: Trapped: a song I learned later was originally a reggae song by Jimmy Cliff, transposed by Bruce after he heard the song on a pre-recorded cassette he picked up in an airport gift shop. Rockin’ All Over The World: from John Fogerty’s first solo album after he left Creedence.
